While nothing can take the place of professional inspection and advice, we've had years of experience helping venues make this decision. Here's our take on what you should be considering when starting the decision-making process. Whatever conclusion you and your team arrive at, there are some things that always play into the mix:
What Can't You Do Without?
What would you absolutely have to have on your list when it comes to an upgrade to your retractable seating? We all love a venue that offers every kind of comfort, from the aesthetics right down to the feel of the armrests and the bounce of the carpet underfoot! Would a change from purpose-built seating for one particular kind of event (sport for example), allow your venue to branch out into multi-use? Automatic retractable seating is a must these days but it's not just the big-ticket items; from aisle steps and lighting to cup holders everything needs to be thought through when considering a replacement system or just an enhance or upgrade program.
What's the End Game?
Is the seating stand an older type without aisle rails and dedicated aisles? Is the platform in great condition but only just making the latest requirements for health and safety compliance? If you're not sure on this point, a full inspection could really help in revealing the extent of the upgrade required.
On the big question of capacity - whether more seats are required, or you can't afford to lose any seats at all - the benefit of getting professional advice to inform your plans can't be overstated. Not surprisingly, the capacity question is one that crops up time again when we're asked to advise, and it's not always the case that replacement is a bad idea; sometimes this option is more viable for long term success.
Are your main considerations around aesthetics - perhaps side drapes and panels will improve the look of the venue?
Are the seats simply looking tired? Perhaps a "looks like new" approach is what's needed. If just about every seat in the house feels like sitting on old floorboards with thin foam and even thinner fabric it's time for a change! Are the stand carpets worn and just a little bit, well, smelly? In all of these cases, if it's just a cosmetic uplift that's required and the stand itself is still going strong, seat refurbishments are a great way to give a venue a facelift with true impact.
If the operation of the seating stands is proving a growing problem owing to damaged components that are no longer fit for purpose it's possible to replace them with new parts made with modern materials which are often better than the originals.
Price and Timing Considerations
Of course, this has to be on the list. Everyone has a budget to work to. We'll say it straight off. Our rule of thumb is that if a seating stand refurbishment is going to cost 60% more than a new one, introducing a completely new automatic retractable seating system is the answer - not only for ease of use but allowing you to rethink and maximise the use of your space completely.
Once you've had the benefit of a full inspection and recommendations, a decision can be made. This is always a challenging process but knowing the facts really helps. A specialist seating company will be able to visit, or even view images of your venue to make an initial assessment and get the conversation underway.
Could a phased renovation program be an option for your venue or do you want to get that program underway as soon as possible? Timing is everything, so knowing what you need, and getting the right advice will get you where you need to be well before you begin asking for quotations.
